Holy Week
Dear CBC Family,
“When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.” Matthew 27:50–52
The last verse above really doesn’t get a lot of notice around Good Friday. Do you see what it says to us? Many people came back to life on the day Jesus died. They didn’t have to wait till Easter morning! Life actually began for God’s people at moment of Jesus’ death.
Every year when Good Friday arrives, the atmosphere is subdued by the weight of the immense gravity of what took place. It’s by far the hardest speaking of the year for me. I feel so inadequate. There is nothing any human really can say because whatever comes out of a pastor’s mouth falls so far short of what God did on that dark day. What do you say about the holiest day in all of history? It really is a time to say “you are God in heaven, so let my words be few.”
Good Friday is a tough day. I love Easter, when I can give a standing ovation for Jesus’s victory. The hope of Easter brightens the darkness of Good Friday. But that seems like a long way away since today is only Thursday. However, the text above is making me rethink……
I’ve always thought the Father waited until Easter to clarify His Son’s victory, but He did not! He began bringing His people back to life immediately. Eternal rebirth for humanity began immediately after Jesus completed the work of glorifying His Father and vindicating His justice. Jesus victory, is a truth that unequivocally means life. Eternal life in all its healing, saving glory began on Good Friday. I pray it will continue for you and begin for many this weekend as well.
Our service tomorrow is at 5:30 PM and Sunday Easter service is at 10:00 AM. No service on Saturday night this week. Grab someone who needs life and bring them with you. Perhaps the Lord will apply the amazing, redemptive work of Christ to them as they sit right next to you.
Blessings to you all.
