Finish His work
4:34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”
Dear CBC Family,
After Jesus spoke to the woman at the well the disciples returned and as the people were gathering, they began to try and convince Jesus to get something to eat.
John 4:31-34 “Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” 33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” 34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”
This text sparks a question: why, for what purpose, has God left you on this earth? We all know the best thing for us is to go home so why are we still here? This is an important question because many believers simply have no answer. Why does He have you still living in the body on this planet?
It seems to me that it’s easy for us to lose focus on God’s plans as we live life, eating, sleeping … feeding our natural desires. We’re just here. We wake up, get dressed and go and live life every day, then collapse back into bed at night. That’s it. Time just kind of drifts by. We follow our plans to acquire this or that or save for this or that or go here or there and often fail to consider what God wants from the day, or life, He has given.
From the text we can see that Jesus was determined to minister to the Samaritan woman at the well despite being tired, inconvenienced, thirsty and hungry.
Jesus knew this day had a purpose and the disciples only saw a regular day and lunchtime. Of course, Jesus would need to eat eventually, but the point He was making was that the thing that drove Him, the thing that energized Him, the thing that had Him pressing through His physical limitations, was to finish the work that His Father had given Him to do. He knew what that work was and that work was His priority!
What work has God given you to do? Please, use your God-given gifts and resources to do that, to be about His business while you are here on earth. Be energized, be focused, be driven because that’s why He’s left you here, to finish the work that He’s given you to do.
I can tell you one thing, that work is on the narrow path. Please remember that so many never make walks down that path because they can’t get all their junk through the narrow gate. That gate is only wide enough for you. Your plans, desires, stuff simply can’t get through which is why Jesus said to “strive” to enter it. It’s a tight squeeze.
Next Saturday night (22nd) is the annual business meeting. It will start right after church at 6:30 PM. It will only go for an hour.
This week’s sermon will come out of Romans 12:1-2 as we continue to look at worship and the renewal of our minds so that we can know and do the will of God. This is the beginning of the application part of this book. Join us as the HS disciples us into His ways.
Blessings,
Pastor Scott
